20 Year Old Rookie Trevor Bayne has won the Daytona 500

Improbably, unbelievably, 20-year-old Trevor Bayne has won the Daytona 500.

A kid who just left his teen years on Saturday won the Great American Race a day later, ushering in NASCAR’s newest star. Amazingly, Bayne has no full-time ride and isn’t even running for points in the Sprint Cup Series this year.

Somehow, Bayne sent the Wood Brothers’ famous No. 21 car to Victory Lane, with a retro David Pearson paint scheme along for the ride.

Runnerup Carl Edwards’ late charge – a push from third-place David Gilliland – was barely not enough to overtake Bayne.

There was a race record for both lead changes and caution flags resulted in one of the strangest Daytona 500s in the 53-year history of the “Great American Race.”

The two-car drafts were prevalent throughout the race – as expected – and there were plenty of crashes because of it. Several star drivers were collected in early wrecks, leaving just a few solid contenders at the end.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The white No. 3 decals are no bigger than a fist and sit just above and behind the driver’s side window of all the Richard Childress Racing team’s Chevrolets. Crew members wore black baseball caps with the same No. 3 logo and driver Tony Stewart strolled through the Daytona International Speedway garage Friday afternoon clutching one of the prized caps himself.

Friday marked exactly 10 years since the driver of the Richard Childress Racing No. 3, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, was killed in Turn 4 of this track after crashing on the last lap of the Daytona 500. The speedway will remember the NASCAR icon with a moment of silence and fans will hold up three fingers on the third lap of Sunday’s Daytona 500.

But for such an overwhelming event, it has been a subdued, subtle and suiting anniversary.

For the past week, Earnhardt’s competitors, teammates and friends have shared emotional stories about that fateful Sunday afternoon. But the one person you won’t see participate in any contrived memorial this weekend is Earnhardt’s son, Dale Jr. No hat, no decal. None necessary.

“I’d personally rather just watch it and stand on the sidelines,” Earnhardt said of the various tributes and memorials planned for the weekend.

“It’s more fun for me hearing how other people reflect, hearing other people’s stories. I know how I feel in my heart and I don’t feel a real need to discuss that a lot.

“I want to do what’s right and honor him, but I don’t need to do it in front of a bunch of people. I feel like he carries his own weight and he doesn’t need me being a part of the celebration or whatever you want to call it. I don’t want to take away from it in any way.”

NASCAR Daytona Opener: Kurt Busch Wins Budweiser Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Call it "Dancing with the Cars.'' Saturday night's Budweiser Shootout exhibition was a 200-mph tango of two-car drafts on the newly-paved, super-fast Daytona International Speedway.

In a photo finish, Kurt Busch won a predictably wild NASCAR opener on the new $20 million racing surface, pushed to the front by defending Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray a few feet before the finish line. Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag first, but was subsequently black-flagged for dropping below the yellow line on the track trying to pass Ryan Newman at the finish line.

NASCAR ruled the finish Busch, McMurray and Newman. Five-time defending Sprint Cup Series champ Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five.

"What an unbelievable experience,'' Busch said.

The race had set a record for lead changes (24) with 12 laps to go -- there ended up being 28. The two-car drafts were easily reaching speeds of 206 mph -- nearly 15 mph faster than last year's pole-winning speed for the Daytona 500.

Using a Scanner at a NASCAR Race

Once you've experienced a race with a scanner, you can't imagine watching one without the headphones on your ears. You are able to listen to communication among the driver, his pit crew and spotter, as well as radio broadcasts and track announcements, which are usually otherwise inaudible due to the race noise.

Using a scanner helps you discover the race behind the race, hearing differing pit strategies, learning how the cars are handling and discovering who is mad at whom. Basically, you'll hear what these guys really want to say, but can't in front of a television camera.

When I started scanning races, I used a cheap 200-channel scanner with a frequency range reaching 800Mhz, and two sets of inexpensive headphones with a splitter. I bought it on sale in 1997, and the whole set-up cost me around $200. It worked, but I have since learned that there are big differences with scanners, headsets and even antennaes. In short, you can get by with less expensive set-ups, but spending a few extra dollars will save some frustration with bleed-over and lost reception at the track.

If you don't want to buy a scanner, you can rent them at the track. The cost to rent one for the weekend is $55-60, so you can do the math to see how quickly you can own one at those prices. Plus, I've seen the trackside rental places run out of scanners, so you're definitely not guaranteed to get one.

What would it be like to be a part of the thrill and excitement that goes on among the crew of NASCAR driver during a heated race? Those that know the NASCAR frequencies that each individual driver transmits on during the race can say that they've experienced it all first hand. Drivers run into all kinds of problems during races and they have a lot of triumphs too. It's all usually captured through the transmissions they send to their crew as they tear around the track and for those in the know, they can be a part of it all as well. However it should be said that the activity of scanning frequencies can be considered illegal in some cases so it's important to know what's going to get you in very big trouble and what areas considered ok to an extent.

First of all, not all frequencies are the same from race to race and track to track. There are groups that keep up with NASCAR frequencies and if you're planning on making it a part of your regular trips to the races, you may want to join one. That's not to say that there aren't places online that you can find these out, but it's nice to belong to a community of fellow enthusiasts that may be willing to share a lot of information and tips that you can't always find anywhere else. If frequencies have been changed for any reason, you may find out from a friend in a group or forum before you head out to the track.

NASCAR Frequencies Can Change From Race To Race

Each of the drivers in a race has several NASCAR frequencies to broadcast on. Even the governing body of NASCAR itself can't determine which frequencies will be useable at all times. There are usually about four available frequencies for a driver. A primary and secondary as well as two alternates. Thankfully there are some websites that list all of these for scanner enthusiasts to make use of. But it's not just for a single area of NASCAR. In some cases, the frequencies for all of the series including the Busch, Nextel and even CART racing.

NASCAR Richard Petty's Wife Diagnosed With Cancerous Brain Tumor

Lynda Petty, wife of all-time leading NASCAR race winner Richard Petty, has been diagnosed with a Central Nervous System lymphoma, which is a type of cancerous brain tumor.

A statement released Thursday by Richard Petty Motorsports said that Lynda will be treated at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., which is about 65 miles east of the Petty home in Level Cross, N.C.

"We are thankful for the medical team at Duke. My wife Lynda is in good hands," Richard Petty said. "The doctors and our family are very optimistic that the treatment for this cancer will be successful."

Lynda had been having problems with her eyesight, and the Pettys issued a statement on Jan. 22 saying that Lynda would undergo a medical procedure "to determine the cause of an ongoing medical condition." CNS Lymphoma is generally treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy or both.

Richard plans to be at the track for Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway, but it will be a day-to-day thing.

NASCAR Driver and Owners are happy that GM has pulled out of Bankruptcy.

JOLIET, Ill. -- The swift exit of General Motors from bankruptcy protection was good news for NASCAR's industry leaders, who count on the automaker's financial support to fund their pricey race teams.

GM emerged Friday after only 40 days under court protection. The sport's heavyweights like Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all drive Chevrolets. Hendrick Motorsports standout Jimmie Johnson has won the last three Cup championships in Chevrolets, and team owner Rick Hendrick has long expressed his support of GM, even as the automaker sunk into bankruptcy.

Hendrick vice president of development Doug Duchardt said Friday that Hendrick Motorsports never wavered in its support.

"We've raced Chevys for 25 years," Duchardt said at Chicagoland Speedway. "This is just one situation. We've worked through it and we'll move on down the road."

Truex Jr. will move to Michael Waltrip Racin for 2010 season

CORNELIUS, N.C. -- Martin Truex Jr. has known for more than six weeks what his plans are for next year.

On Tuesday at Michael Waltrip Racing headquarters, Truex finally got the opportunity to make the official announcement of his move to MWR under a multi-year agreement with the Toyota team, the specific terms of which were not disclosed.

"I'm excited," said Truex, who will drive the No. 56 NAPA Camry next season as team owner Michael Waltrip scales back to an abbreviated schedule in the No. 55 Toyota. "I've been telling y'all for a month and a half that I want to tell you, but I can't.

"It's hard to hold it in. I've been so excited about it -- I really have been. I haven't been excited about anything like this for a long time. I feel good about it."

Concurrent with the Truex announcement, NAPA confirmed a multi-year extension of its sponsorship agreement with MWR. NAPA also will sponsor Waltrip's car in the 2010 Daytona 500. Beyond that, Waltrip, 46, a two-time Daytona 500 winner, hasn't set his schedule for next year but says he could run as many as 10-12 races depending on sponsorship.

Chances are he will complete in all four restrictor-plate races, two each at Daytona and Talladega.

NASCAR driver suspended for drug violation at Richmond

NASCAR will announce at 6 p.m. today that a driver has been suspended for a violation of NASCAR's drug testing policy. If the driver is a Sprint Cup series driver, it will be the first such suspension under NASCAR's new drug testing policy.

The Southern 500 begins this evening at 7:20 p.m.

The Charlotte Observer reported that the driver was in fact a Sprint Cup driver and his suspension came from results taken at Richmond International Raceway.

I'm off to the drivers' meeting, I'll have more as I get it. One driver I can throw out is Reed Sorenson. His name kept popping up, so I asked a Richard Petty Motorsports spokesman who said, as I walked up to him, "We're clean."

Too Many Gadgets can make your Vacation a Disaster

Our electronic age has made many of so dependent on gadgets that we may have withdraw symptoms if we don't take the laptop, cellphone, Blackberry, MP3 Player, GPS among other things when we travel. One day without these devices and we could find ourselves looking through the yellow pages for the local GA meeting. No Not Gamblers Anonymous but Gadget Anonymous.

With todays security issues at the airport, the more gadgets you have in your carry ons causes you to have to prove that the unit will turn on and shut off without activating some Explosive devise. Want to be frisked by that hefty TSA official with bad breath? carry all of your favorites along with you.

What about thieves? Anyone wearing expensive jewelery and high priced electronics in tow send dollar signs to the opportunist thief awaiting unsuspecting tourists.

The bottom line? Consider what you must have with you on the aircraft. When the writer travels overseas to mission trips in third world countries, that MP3 Player or Radio alarm clock is the most inexpensive money can buy, I sacrifice quality for safety and not being held up by TSA with Boom boxes that could be loaded with cocaine or other illegal substances.

Check with your Travel Agent for more tips. Have a great trip and leave your busy life behind.

The hassle of air travel is often one reason. Anyone who has been through airport security with much more than a laptop knows the pain. Gadget freaks, er, lovers, can face delays. At worst, they could soon be undressing for strangers.

Let's approach this problem from two directions. First, for those who really need to travel with a bunch of high-tech devices, we'll talk about some things that will help. Veteran road warriors already know most of this but it may help those who only travel for vacations.

Get charged up: Every device that you carry should be capable of working when you go through security. Computers should compute, radios and MP3 players should play and digital cameras should be capable of taking and displaying photos.

Organization pays: If you have accessories such as ethernet cables, battery chargers, extra memory cards and other items with wires or batteries, put them in a single clear plastic baggy. Otherwise, the security folks may need to paw through your luggage to find all the little wires and gizmos that show up on the scanner.

Don't overexplain: Obviously you should answer questions if you are asked. But don't start explaining unless you are asked. It often sounds defensive or even suspicious. Believe me, the security person has seen plenty of electronic devices before the ones in your baggage. So don't assume he's going to be puzzled by your MP3 player.

Don't try to hide things: This should be obvious but I've personally seen it in security lines. People poke gadgets in hidden pouches of luggage. That, of course, makes the security person even more interested.

The other angle we'll look at it — and my favorite — is whether you can leave some of your technology at home.

By taking all your gizmos, you have more stuff to carry around. And if you carry high-tech devices you feel obliged to use them. Simple solution: Take a break from e-mail, texting and instant messaging if you can.

There are still other reasons. Expensive high-tech devices are magnets for thieves, for instance, and they can get left behind or lost on a trip.

Still, I realize the world has shifted and many of us — me included — end up carrying some gadgets along.

So here's a compromise: Multifunctional devices — say an iPhone or other small device with the same features — make enormous sense for travelers. A single device can handle the functions of e-mail, phone, GPS and even camera.

As Barack Obama continues his focus on states that usually vote Republican in presidential elections, word comes that he may campaign at a NASCAR event. Why? Well, to paraphrase a supposed Willy Sutton line that he robbed banks because that's where the money is, if Obama needs white working-class voters in the fall, there are few better places to find them than at a NASCAR event.

Roll Call has the news, but it's behind their subscription wall. Briefly, they quote Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki as saying a campaign appearance was a possibility but no dates or firm confirmations were offered. "We would love to make it to a NASCAR race if the schedule permits," she said.

Roll Call noted that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hits the Chicagoland Speedway next weekend then later in the month races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Bill Clinton tried that tack in September 1992, campaigning at the Southern 500 Stock Car race in Darlington, S.C., but drew jeers and catcalls and insults about his lack of Vietnam War service. That was the year Richard Petty was retiring, and the staunch Republican and racing icon told track officials he wouldn't drive the pace car -- part of his retirement-year sendoff -- if Clinton was in the parade.

Clinton lost South Carolina by 8 points. And more recently George W. Bush actively courted NASCAR fans -- getting a much better reception

Lloyd Moore, NASCAR's oldest driver, dies at 95

Lloyd Moore, a NASCAR pioneer who ran 49 races between 1949 -- the first year of what is now the Sprint Cup Series -- and 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.

Moore posted 13 top-fives and 23 top-10s with one win, at Winchester, Ind., on Oct. 15, 1950.

Moore, who lived in the Frewsburg, N.Y., house in which he was born on June 8, 1912, also died in the same home.

A school bus driver in the early 1930s, Moore also worked as a mechanic in a Studebaker garage. He made his NASCAR debut on Oct. 2, 1949, at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh, Pa., Moore finished sixth behind Lee Petty.

"I was saddened to learn of the passing of Lloyd Moore yesterday," seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty said in a statement. "He was a joy to be around. Lloyd was a connection to the origin of NASCAR. Talking to him was like taking a trip down memory lane, for me, because he raced against my dad. I still have memories of those races. He would come by the house after a lot of the races because he and daddy were good friends.

"So I knew Lloyd from the time I was a young kid and I am proud to say that we developed a great friendship over the years. Lloyd was a great driver and a great person. He will truly be missed."

Moore's final start came on Sept. 5, 1955, at Darlington. He finished 24th in the 69-car field that included winner Herb Thomas, Tim Flock, Buck Baker, Everett "Cotton" Owens, Marvin Panch, Lee Petty, Joe Weatherly, Curtis Turner and Glenn "Fireball" Roberts.

Moore is survived by his wife, Virginia; six children; 14 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- On Monday, Michael McDowell had a long talk with Jeff Burton about driver etiquette. After walking away from a wild crash during Friday's Sprint Cup qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway, the next conversation between the two may be about safety, something that's near and dear to Burton's heart.

Heading into Turn 1 on his second qualifying lap, McDowell's No. 00 Toyota twitched, then shot up the track as he tried to catch the spin. The rookie slammed nearly head-on into the SAFER barrier, then spun upside down for several hundred yards before the car began a series of at least eight barrel rolls, coming to rest right-side up on the backstretch (watch video).

"I came off of [Turn 4] on that last lap and it just felt a little bit off," McDowell said. "I went down into [Turn] 1 and I don't know if it was the oil dry or something happened, but it was real unfortunate for those guys. I hate to make a lot of work for the guys back in the shop.

"That's one of the worst wrecks I've seen, for sure, in a while and I'm not excited I had to participate in it."

The baseball season got off to a great start last night (are we counting the games in Japan?), as the Washington Nationals' Ryan Zimmerman smacked a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning to lead the team to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the first ever regular season game at Nationals Park.
On hand was President Bush, who threw out the first pitch, which announcer Joe Morgan called "high heat." Bush was invited into ESPN's broadcast booth to speak with Morgan and Jon Miller, and ended up calling the first-ever home run at the new stadium, hit by the Braves' Chipper Jones.

Bush looked quite at home in the booth. The only time politics came up was when Miller mentioned Bush's 2004 State of the Union speech, in which he called on baseball to rid itself of steroids.

Danica Patrick claims new racing weight requirement designed with her in mind

INDIANAPOLIS (Hollywood Today) – Professional racer Danica Patrick is used to getting extra notice from male racing fans, but she’s not happy with the recent attention the Indy Racing League (IRL) has allegedly focused on her. According to Patrick, the IRL’s new rule that a driver’s weight must be included when factoring a vehicle’s minimum weight is directed squarely at her.

“If someone’s going to take the hit, it’s going to be me,” Patrick told the Associated Foreign Press. “It’s disappointing the league decided to do that. Just your God-given stature is being penalized.”

The new rule means that the 100-pound Patrick, the lightest racer in the league, will have to add bulk to her vehicle to fulfill the new requirement. Before the rule, Patrick, 26, had a small mathematical edge over heavier drivers, whose extra weight, in theory, would slightly slow their vehicles.

Despite having not won a race since her 2005 IRL debut, Patrick has received a large amount of media attention for her gender’s rarity on the racing circuit, as well as her good looks. She has posed for men’s magazine “FHM,” appeared in the 2008 swimsuit issue of “Sports Illustrated” (and on the magazine’s cover in June 2005) and been a spokeswoman for Secret deodorant, car manufacturer Honda and domain registrar Go Daddy. She also raced singer Jay-Z in his “Show Me What You Got” music video

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The pressure is officially on Jamie McMurray, a one-time Chase contender who now finds himself in jeopardy of missing races.

A disastrous start to the season - his best finish was a 22nd at California - sent McMurray into NASCAR's first off weekend ranked 36th in the points standings. It had to have made for a miserable break for McMurray.

He heads into Martinsville Speedway, where he must qualify on speed to make Sunday's race. It's an agonizing position for any driver, but must be particularly difficult for the self-loathing McMurray - a guy who was so despondent over his first season at Roush Fenway Racing, he couldn't sleep and was convinced he had to relearn how to drive.

A personal trainer and a sports psychologist helped him rebuild his confidence, and the work seemed to pay off last season when McMurray snapped a 166-race winless streak and showed flashes of the skill that had once anointed him NASCAR's next superstar.

A replacement driver for an injured Sterling Marlin, McMurray set a NASCAR record by winning in his second start in October 2002.

But with just two victories in 191 career starts, he's never lived up to that early billing. Even now, in his topflight Roush ride, McMurray is struggling to get the job done.

With the pressure mounting to solidify a spot inside the top 35, McMurray instead finished 40th or worse in the past two races. His last-place finish two weeks ago in Bristol dropped him five spots in the standings, and put him officially outside the top 35.

And there's no relief in sight.

SEPANG, Malaysia (AP) -Two five-grid place penalties for causing interference in qualifying Saturday were the source of McLaren's problems at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Things got worse with a fumbled pit stop, poor tire choice - and even a malfunctioning drinks system - in Sunday's race.

The mistakes opened the way for archrival Ferrari, which rebounded from its worst start to an F1 season in 16 years to get reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen back atop the podium.

"I was the first to say in Australia there won't be much in it," McLaren team principal Ron Dennis said after the race. "I would say the same now, and I will say the same in Bahrain."

Lewis Hamilton still leads the drivers' championship after two rounds with a win in Australia and a fifth-place showing in Malaysia, although team chief executive Martin Whitmarsh described his weekend performance as disappointing. Teammate Heikki Kovalainen finished third.

"There is no doubt Heikki progressed as the event went on," Whitmarsh said. "Heikki got to a more comfortable position with the balance of his car and it went away from Lewis.

"By Lewis' high standards, he would be disappointed with that."

CHICAGO (AP) - The new pastor of Barack Obama's Chicago church said during Easter Sunday services that recent national scrutiny of the church is a test that will only make the congregation stronger.

"Any time you go through a crucifixion experience ... eventually they have to lift you up," said the Rev. Otis Moss III, who did not shy away from the controversy surrounding his predecessor at Trinity United Church of Christ, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

Wright retired from Trinity's pulpit last month but retains the title of senior pastor. Video from some of his more inflammatory sermons has surfaced online and on television in recent weeks.

Moss said Sunday that Wright's critics and the news media "are just lifting us up to give us the opportunity to speak love to this situation."

Obama, a Democratic presidential candidate, has responded to the flap by condemning Wright's statements but expressing admiration and support for the pastor who officiated at his wedding, baptized his two daughters and inspired the title of his best-selling book, "The Audacity of Hope."

In a speech last week that took the country's racial divide head-on, Obama - the son of a white woman from Kansas and a Kenyan father - said black anger persists over injustice in America, and whites shouldn't be surprised about the way it's expressed in sermons.

"The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning," Obama said.

Obama did not attend the Easter Sunday service.

Trinity describes itself as "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian," a declaration some consider separatist and even racist. In recent days, a CBS News poll indicated most voters have heard at least something about Wright's comments.

In the years immediately following World War II, stock-car racing was experiencing the greatest popularity it had ever seen. Tracks throughout the country were drawing more drivers, and bigger crowds.

Nonetheless, there was a serious lack of organization. From track to track, rules were different. Some tracks were just makeshift facilities, built to produce one big show at a county fair or something similar to capitalize on the crowds flocking to the events. Other tracks were more suited to handle the cars, but not the crowds. Some could manage both, but did little to adhere to rules set by other tracks.

In December 1947, Bill France Sr., of Daytona Beach, Fla., organized a meeting at the Streamline Hotel across the street from the Atlantic Ocean to discuss the problems facing stock-car racing.

France had come to Florida from Washington, D.C., years earlier. He operated a local service station and also promoted races on the city's famed beach-road courses, often racing himself. He was a man of strong will -- and ambition. Thus, by the time that meeting at the Streamline Hotel was complete, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was born. Few knew when the meeting adjourned if the organization would be successful. In fact, there were skeptics who believed it never would work.

Not even France, who believed a sanctioning body was exactly what the sport of stock-car racing needed, could have envisioned what NASCAR has become today.

Things came together quickly. The first NASCAR-sanctioned race was held on Daytona's beach course Feb. 15, 1948, just two months after the organizational meeting. Red Byron, a stock car legend from Atlanta, won the event in his Ford Modified. Six days later on Feb. 21, 1948, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was incorporated.

It was 1949, however, when what is now the Cup Series, the premier racing division in America, was born.

Jim Roper of Great Bend, Kan., was the winner of the first ever NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event, held at the Charlotte (N.C.) Fairgrounds on June 19, 1949. A tremendous crowd attended the event to see automobiles with the appearance of a street-car race door-to-door. The new racing series was off and running. And it was an immediate success.

Plans immediately were made for ways to bring bigger, faster races to bigger, hungrier crowds and less than a year later (1950), the country's first asphalt superspeedway, Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, opened its doors for the new division.

The first decade for the Cup Series was one of tremendous growth. Characters became heroes and fans hung on every turn of the wheel, watching drivers manhandle cars at speeds fans wished they could legally run themselves.

Names like Lee Petty, Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker, Herb Thomas, the Flock brothers, Bill Rexford, Paul Goldsmith and others became as well-known to race fans as Willie, Mickey and the Duke were to baseball fans.

Looking to the future, and the past with the success of Darlington, Bill France Sr., began construction of a 2.5-mile, high-banked superspeedway four miles off the beach in Daytona Beach.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -As the rain poured down on Bristol Motor Speedway, a restless Juan Pablo Montoya searched the Internet for something to do. He was out of new movies and wasn't interested in the Formula One season opener.

So he went shopping.

Montoya hit just about every store in downtown Johnson City, stocking up on supplies to bring home to Colombia for a 10-day break during NASCAR's off weekend. He picked up lawn equipment at Home Depot, and parts to trick out his Polaris at Sears.

He grabbed a new stack of DVD's at Target, bath wash at Babies 'R' Us and convinced the sales clerk to sell him the "Cars" themed TV set on display at Toys 'R' Us.

Six hours later, he was spent as he settled into a booth at Burger King for a double whopper and fries as race fans throughout the restaurant snapped his photo from their camera phones.

"I'm tired. Really tired," Montoya said. "It's been a busy opening month to the season and I'm really, really ready for a break."

That's the sentiment throughout NASCAR right now. A tweak to the schedule this season moved the first bye weekend back three weeks, giving drivers their first real chance at any significant time off this week.

Add in a two-day test in Phoenix, bad weather in California that forced the Sprint Cup Series to hold over an extra day and the numerous sponsor commitments that fill the early part of a drivers' season, and everybody is tired.

But Montoya also had a whirlwind trip through Colombia last week in which he and wife, Connie, hosted NASCAR chairman Brian France and other dignitaries as they showed off their Formula Smiles Foundation in Cartagena.

Bristol notes: Harvick sorry about collision with Stewart

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Kevin Harvick is scheduled to appear on Tony Stewart's Sirius Satellite Radio show Monday night but don't expect any fireworks between the drivers who collided late in Sunday's Food City 500 unless Stewart brings spotter Mark Robertson.

After accidentally slamming Stewart's No. 20 Toyota into a spin, Harvick attempted to relay an apology through his spotter.

"The first thing his spotter said was he's going to whip somebody's (butt), and if Tony didn't do it, he'd do it," said Harvick, runner-up to teammate Jeff Burton. "Tony and I are big boys, and we can handle that. We don't need some idiot up there stirring it up."

Harvick said his No. 29 Chevrolet slid into Stewart's car after he clipped the apron in Turn 2.

"(The race) was mine to lose, and I lost it," said Harvick, who was in fourth on a Lap 496 (of a scheduled 500) restart but with fresher tires than the top three.

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -It was like the good old days for Joe Gibbs Racing on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway when newcomer Kyle Busch put the No. 18 in the Winner's Circle.

But there was a new twist - the first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory for Toyota. And Busch and teammate Tony Stewart also gave the Japanese automaker its first 1-2 finish.

It was the first win in 40 Cup starts for Toyota and it confirmed that the company's signing of the powerhouse Gibbs team over the winter will make its Camrys, which struggled in their 2007 debut, competitive with the other top teams.

"We were all apprehensive at the start of the year," said team owner Gibbs, who returned to racing full-time after retiring late last year as coach of the Washington Redskins. "There was a huge amount of work we had to go through."

The win put the No. 18 back on top at Atlanta, where former Gibbs driver Bobby Labonte won six races in that car and was a perennial contender.

The significance was not lost on Busch.

"The 18! The 18! The 18 is back at Atlanta," Busch screamed on the radio after crossing the finish line ahead of teammate Tony Stewart. "Congratulations, (crew chief Steve) Addington, it's your first one."

HAMPTON, Ga. — Tony Stewart took a hard lick last Sunday at Las Vegas when his right front tire blew out.

The two-time Cup champion wasn't injured, but he was still seething after arriving at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

"There isn't anybody, I don't think, who is happy with the tires we have got," Stewart said. "After 10 years in the Cup Series, you learn to be highly disappointed with everything that Goodyear does."

Stewart pointed out that the tires at Las Vegas were inconsistent, with some going a full fuel run without a problem and others wearing quickly.

"I expect it to be wacky this week, too. I hate to say it, but the best thing that Goodyear does is make that gold trophy at the end of the year," Stewart added, referring to the gold car model that is given by the tire company to each year's champion. "That is one thing that they always do right. Everything from that moment on until the end of the year, it's a crapshoot. You never know what you're going to get when you get here.

"This weekend is proof of it. I don't think you will hear a driver here who is happy with the tires we got this weekend."

Justin Fantozzi, marketing manager for Goodyear Racing, the exclusive tire supplier for NASCAR's top three series, said Saturday that the company is still gathering and analyzing data from Las Vegas, but he was confident it brought good tires to Atlanta.

Tony Stewart Smoke Goodyear Tires

In an interview during Cup practice today Tony Stewart gave Goodyear a scathing review regarding the tires being used at Atlanta. He said the cold temps were hiding Goodyear's incompetence. He then went on to say "It's a shame the world's number one racing series has to be this way" And last said "that's what happens when they (Goodyear) pays to have an exclusive deal."

The reason I put this as a thread is it's unusual for a driver to dis Goodyear this strongly. It has always seemed to me there is an unwritten rule to cool it in your criticism of Goodyear. Even the announcers appear to follow this rule. It will be interesting to see what the reaction of NASCAR and Goodyear is.

Stewart says Goodyear tires’ quality isn’t consistent

Tony Stewart took a hard lick last Sunday at Las Vegas when his right front tire blew out.

The two-time Cup champion wasn’t injured, but he was still seething after arriving at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

“There isn’t anybody, I don’t think, who is happy with the tires we have got,” Stewart said. “After 10 years in the Cup Series, you learn to be highly disappointed with everything that Goodyear does.

Atlanta Motor Speedway: Kyle Busch Wins!

Kyle Busch has found the sweet spot, winning Friday’s American Commercial Lines 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his third win in three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts at the fast track.

It also marked his second straight win, his eighth overall in the series, and gave him a commanding 72-point lead over Todd Bodine in the standings.

And he did all this in spite of a late pit stop for adjustments that dropped him all the way back to 21st and forced him to quickly work his way back up through the field.

“That baby was evil loose; she was all over the place,” Busch said. “We were finally able to get it handling really well there on the last pit stop, and she was a rocket from there.”

Nationwide Series qualifying snowed out

Qualifying for Saturday afternoon's Nicorette 300 Nationwide Series race was cancelled by snow in the Atlanta, GA area.

Temperatures near freezing and light snow flurries forced NASCAR officials to fill out the starting grid by rule book. Since only 43 drivers were on the entry list, all drivers will run in the race.

Jeff Burton and the No.29 Richard Childress Racing team will start on the pole when the race gets underway. It is scheduled to drop the green flag on Saturday at 2 p.m. (et).

NASCAR officials still hope to get in a Sprint Cup practice before the afternoon race begins.

Mark Martin Wins the Sam's Town 300

Mark Martin was very contrite in his acceptance of victory in the Sam's

Town 300 Nationwide Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday

afternoon. On a restart with 10 laps to go, Brad Keselowski was the

leader and Dario Franchitti was second. Both drivers had stayed on the

track on the 12th caution of the race, both on old tires.

Carl Edwards restarted third with Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer and Mark

Martin in tow, all on new tires. Edwards slipped by Franchitti without

much trouble and was waging a side-by-side battle with Keselowski.

Meanwhile Martin had gotten by Bowyer and Biffle and was now squarley

behind Edwards in the bottom lane and Keselowski was still riding the

high side. Martin got into the back Edwards forcing him into

Keselowski's car. Both creened out of control and Martin took the lead.

That set up a green-white-checkers situation and Martin won the race

pulling away from Biffle and Bowyer.

"I couldn't stop it once it started," said Martin, "I ran into the back

of Carl, I hate it, I just hate it. I sure didn't intend for it to turn

out like that." Edwards wanted to be mad but just couldn't. "I would

like to be really mad at Mark," Edwards said. "But he's a guy we all

look up to. I am sure he just made a mistake."

Las Vegas lobbies for NASCAR date changes Atlanta

LAS VEGAS - Speedway Motorsports chairman Bruton Smith believes that switching the fall dates of Atlanta Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway would solve two of the Fontana track's problems — weather and attendance.

"We're interested in helping California," Smith said. "The proposal has been made that we give California the October date in Atlanta. Then, the Labor Day event date would come to Atlanta. Everyone will love it. The sport will love it, you will love it and I will love it.

"It's the thing to do. The people I've talked with within the sport — within NASCAR — they all agree it's the thing to do. I hope we'll have an answer in the near future. If it happens, it will be for next year."

If the change takes place, the track formerly known as California Speedway would receive a coveted Chase for the Sprint Cup date and relief from horrendous late summer heat. Last year's Labor Day weekend temperatures reached 114-degrees in Fontana.

In exchange, Atlanta's date would offer more pleasant weather, as it would be run under the lights on a Saturday, giving teams the added bonus of having an extra day or two to prepare for the last race of the regular season in Richmond, Va., the following week. The move would also alleviate Atlanta's attendance problem, as the race has often been hampered by a schedule conflict with the University of Georgia versus University of Florida football game.

That isn't the only change Smith wants in future versions of the NASCAR calendar.

During his chat with the media Friday, the billionaire reiterated his feelings that Las Vegas Motor Speedway should have two Cup races every season, and that he shouldn't have to switch a date from one of his six other tracks in order to get his wish.

"I think we've earned a second race," Smith said. "I feel like we have earned that right.

"There are other places out there that maybe a date could come from."

Robby Gordon gets his day

The National Stock Car Commission will hear Robby Gordon's appeal on March 5 — the day he returns to Charlotte from the two-day Phoenix test. NASCAR docked Gordon 100 points and fined his crew chief Frank Kerr $100,000 for having an unapproved nose on the front of his No. 7 Dodge.

"We're prepared but that doesn't mean we're going to win," Gordon said. "We have our facts and we'll present them. Then we'll see whether they think our facts are worthwhile or not."

Gordon finished eighth in the season opener at Daytona and 18th last Monday at California Speedway. He is currently 32nd in points, but would be 12th without the penalty

'Rowdy' Kyle Busch getting the last laugh

Just two weeks into the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Busch could be downtrodden about losing his ride at the juggernaut Hendrick Motorsports organization, the four-car outfit which captured 18 victories last season and has won seven championships since forming in 1984.

Instead, Busch is focused on showing the decision-makers at HMS, and the world, that releasing him was a mistake.

Heading into his home race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the 22-year-old currently leads both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Craftsman Truck Series point standings and is second on the Nationwide tour, 30 markers behind new teammate Tony Stewart.

"I think it's pretty cool, but (it) puts a lot of weight on your shoulders to have to stand up and live up to that throughout the season," said Busch about his impressive start. "I'm down for it. I think I have a great shot to win three championships, but I won't be able to run for all three.

"We'll run as best as we can week in and week out. The beginning of the year is the best time to get off to a good start."

Even with the hot start, Busch is well aware how quickly things can turn in NASCAR. Last season, he posted two top 10s in the first three races and then went on to score a victory at Bristol Motor Speedway — the debut for the NASCAR's new Car of Tomorrow. Busch was quite vocal over his disdain of the new car in his post-race comments, a sentiment that would not sit well with NASCAR officials or his team owner Rick Hendrick.

While staying hot at Martinsville the following week, where he finished fourth, Busch and the No. 5 Hendrick Motorspots team scored three finishes outside of the top 35 in the next five races, including an April 15 incident at Texas Motor Speedway which would mark the beginning of the end for his association with HMS.

At Texas, Busch was involved in a three-car wreck with Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. After a miscommunication with the No. 5 crew, Busch left the track while the team worked feverishly to fix the car and get back in the race. Earnhardt, who was still at the track, subbed for Busch and offered a glimpse of the future.

Vegas No Gamble for Nascar

It's the perfect marriage of the glossiest, most colorful and loudest American sport and the city that pumps out glitter and glam 24/7.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway opened in 1996, and Cup racing hit town two years later. For a city that doesn't think neon really is bright enough, it has been a perfect partnership. The racing wasn't sensational in the early years -- a new track configuration has helped -- but there obviously are other things to sell in Las Vegas. The shortlist: food, fun, frolic, even the Hoover Dam.

And what's that they say? "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." In particular, your money.

Stepping into this fertile environment with all the bloom and bluster he typically commands was Bruton Smith, whose Speedway Motorsports Inc. empire absorbed the track in 1998. Quickly it became another of Smith's playthings. He toys with racetracks like an 8-year-old zaps aliens in a video game. No one is safe. Any mountain can be moved (see the Bristol Motor Speedway file). Any resistance can be overcome (check out Lowe's Motor Speedway, where Smith met initial opposition in adding a dragstrip but eventually had Concord, N.C., officials lining up to shine his shoes).

Smith owns several of the most impressive tracks on NASCAR's schedule, but Las Vegas is where he hopes to leave his most impressive imprint. Already he has dropped $100 million into a well-planned and widely accepted renovation of the facility, a project that includes the Neon Garage, a Vegas-worthy infield spread that gives fans an up-close look at garage activities and offers them the opportunity to spend whatever money they haven't lost in the casinos. It's similar to other infield fan zones, except that it's elevated to fit both the Smith and Vegas style. Simply put, it's bombastic.

Having massaged both the racing and fan experience venues in Las Vegas, Smith has two other goals for his "Western Division." He wants to bring another Cup race to the desert, and he wants NASCAR to move its season-ending awards banquet -- it has been held in New York City since 1981 -- to Vegas. Both ideas make sense. The second racing date is likely to happen, but the NASCAR higher-ups love New York and it will take a lot to pry the banquet away from the folks in Gotham.

Smith, of course, has a lot. He is a billionaire, and his money doesn't just talk, it screams.

Last year, he bought New Hampshire International Speedway (quickly renaming it New Hampshire Motor Speedway to fit his other motorsports holdings) for $340 million, chump change in the Smith portfolio. It is widely assumed that, sooner or later (probably sooner), he will move one of New Hampshire's two Cup dates to Las Vegas. That would be logical and business-smart.

Newman turns in incredible, emotional stunner

"I know it."

It's the same in every sport. People go with their hearts. They tell you what they want you to hear, implore you to believe in happy endings. But more often than not, the driver knows better, especially one like Ryan Newman, among the few professional drivers with a college degree.

"College taught me two things," said Newman. "It was time management and problem solving."

Having graduated from Purdue in 2001 with a degree in vehicle structure engineering, he is a rationalist. What's more, he understood that the prognostications were rooted in reason, not wishful thinking.

For weeks now, the speculation centered on Joe Gibbs Racing with Tony Stewart, and Hendrick Motorsports with its dream team of drivers, including Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. The smart money was on Toyota and Chevrolet. No one was talking about Dodge or Roger Penske, the owner who'd spent the better part of three decades trying to get a victory in the Great American Race.

As for Ryan Newman, being winless in his last 81 races didn't exactly qualify him as a favorite.

So he was characteristically low key in response to the well-wishers. He didn't want to seem immodest or cocky. But inside, Ryan Newman couldn't help but agree with them. The notion wasn't one he could quantify or calibrate. Engineers don't often put much stock in mere feelings. But it was there, an unmistakable belief in himself and his chances. He wanted to tell them, Yeah, I feel it too.
